“The artists who enjoyed her support owe her a huge debt of gratitude, as do the audiences who enjoy their music today. The history of music, meanwhile, owes Lena Spencer something else- an honored place.”

The Caffè Lena History Project
Since 2002 the Caffè Lena History Project has been committed to documenting the history of the Caffè and commemorating the life and legacy of Lena Spencer.

Please help our 50th anniversary
coffee table book project!

Please help us produce a beautiful coffee table book full of photos, stories, testimonials, and fascinating information about the first five decades of Caffè Lena history!

In order to have the book ready during our 50th anniversary year, we need immediate financial donations to pay for:

  • Photo development
  • Transcription of interviews
  • Digitization of archival materials

Please be a part of preserving and sharing Caffè Lena's story with the world through the book: Behind From Where We Came: The Story of Caffé Lena’s First 50 Years.

Our financial goal is $35,000 by 2010. No gift is too small, too large, or too quick —and all will be gratefully accepted!

The Caffè Lena History Project has:

  • Conducted extensive oral history interviews with more than fifty people who have been an important part of the Caffe's story. Some of those who were interviewed have passed on, but their stories have been forever preserved

  • Collected thousands of photos of performers, Lena and staff

  • Preserved countless posters, articles, writings, works of art and other memorabilia created throughout the Caffe's history

  • Secured the support of the Library of Congress in digitizing the Caffe Lena archives, thus making Caffe Lena's history permanently accessible to a national audience.
We need donations to:
  • Fund additional collection and transcription of oral histories

  • Fund the preservation of memorabilia

  • Print and scan hundreds of negatives

Seeking Materials and Stories For Caffè Lena Archival Collection
The Caffè Lena History Project is always seeking photographs, posters, programs, audio recordings, songbooks, recipes, and letters for our archival collection. If you wish to donate items that you may have in your possession, please email Jocelyn Arem, Caffè Lena History Project Director at jocelyn@Caffelenahistory.org. If we can use your materials, we will be happy to send you a tax donation form. To share a story, please fill out the Oral History Questionnaire.
