Caffè Lena in Saratoga Springs, New York is pleased to announce the
official opening of an extensive history exhibit, "Caffè Lena: 45 Years of Community, Culture and Creativity, 1960-2005" with an accompanying interactive online exhibit at www.Caffèlenahistory.org.
An official exhibit opening, free and open to the public was held at Caffè Lena on Tuesday, July 12th, 2005 from 6:00-10:00pm. This exhibit is presented by the Caffè Lena History Project with additional support from the Saratoga History Museum and Skidmore College.
Caffè Lena is widely recognized as the oldest continuously operating coffeehouse in the country. Started by Lena Spencer in 1960, the café provided a seminal venue for such influential artists as Bob Dylan, Bernice Johnson Reagan, Arlo Guthrie, Don McLean and Ani Difranco.
In 1989 Lena Spencer passed on and her café became a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation run by a few paid staff, a dedicated Board of Directors, and many music-loving volunteers. The Caffè Lena exhibit is the first attempt in the Caffè's history to capture a comprehensive visual display of its archives.
